Riviera Maya, stretching along Highway 307 of Quintanoo Roo, Mexico, is a tourism district noted for its all-inclusive resort along the highway, known as Mayan Resorts, as well as smaller boutique hotels found in the towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Riviera Maya historically begun at Playa del Carmen and ended at Tulum.

However, Mexico’s government is currently promoting Puerto Morelos and Felipe Carrillo Puerto as part of the Riviera Maya tourist corridor. Vacationers seeking quiet and relaxation will find Riviera Maya’s unspoiled, uncrowded powdery sand beaches the perfect spot.

The miles of sandy white beach stretching as far as the eye can see are adorned with palm trees constantly swaying to the rhythm of the Caribbean breeze and protected by a string of coral reefs. Riviera Maya offers vacationers a diverse selection of fun and exhilarating activities from adventure sports to cultural and archeological tours to jungle tours on foot or horseback. One of the activities that visitors should not miss when visiting the Riviera Maya is scuba diving. Riviera Maya’s clear, turquoise waters house the Great Maya Reef, the second largest coral reef in the world after Australia’s the Great Barrier Reef.

The region is also famous for its underground rivers, or cenotes, where scuba divers can experience a unique and exciting type of diving known as cave diving. Another means to experience the marine flora and fauna of the Riviera Maya is through snorkeling. With just a pair of fins, a snorkel and a visor, visitors are all set to view colorful fishes, sea stars and rock formations covered with moss found in the seas of the Riviera Maya. It is mostly safe to swim in the beaches, but undertow can sometimes occur. To avoid accidents, there are flags placed in various points along the Riviera Maya to warn beachgoers on where it is safe or dangerous to swim.
