England - Great Western Beach

Great Western Beach is a sandy beach surrounded by high cliffs. It lies on the northern edge of Newquay in Cronwall, England. The beach can be accessed by a steep slope from Cliff Road. Great Western Beach is one of several fine, sandy beaches in the town of Newquay. The beach derived its name from the Great Western Railway, which was the major mode of transport to the town between 1876 and 1960. After which the motor car became the popular means of getting to Newquay. The railway company also built a large hotel up on the cliffs to supplement the railway service.

The Great Western Hotel offers a view of the sea and is a strategic location for seeing the sights of the north coast of Cornwall. Newquay is still accessible via train and the railway station is close to taxi ranks and bus stops. Families and surfers flock to Great Western Beach, but remains relatively quieter compared to the other beaches found in Newquay, including Porth, Tolcarne and Fistral Sands. During low tide, beachgoers can walk and explore neighboring beaches. The surrounding cliffs provide a shade to beachgoers during the late afternoon. The beach also has a few rock pools, where kids and toddlers can frolic. Great Western Beach offers great waves for surfing and body boarding. Every summer, Newquay hosts a major international surfing competition. Canoeing is also possible as the beach does not have heavy swells. There is a sufficient disabled access and available walking trails for those who prefer to explore or hike. Beach facilities such as toilets, cafes, deck chair rental shops and surfboard rental shops can be easily be found in and around the beach. Seasonal lifeguards man the beach from July and August. Dogs are also allowed on the beach, but access may be restricted from May to September.

The Beach name is derived from the word “Ölüdeniz”, which is pronounced as “ur-LEW-deh-neez”. In the local dialect, the word means “dead”. It has been termed as such because the beach has a very calming effect to its guests especially during storm and rainy seasons. However, the official name of the beach is not Oludeniz but Belcekiz (pronounced as “BEHL-jeh-kuhz”). Technically, Oludeniz is the name of the beach’s lagoon.

The main entry to the beach is along Fethiye, which can be accessed easily from many of Turkey’s towns and cities. In addition, it can also be entered in the country’s southern coast (through the town of Kas) and eastern coast (through Dalyan and Marmaris). A tourist can also visit Oludeniz beach through planes using the Dalaman airport.

Many tourists that visit the beach uses these mountains for recreational and adventure activities such as tandem gliding and paragliding. However, the place also offers ideal swimming, snorkeling, and diving to tourist. Aside from these activities, the beach’s mountains have also protected the area against tropical storms and heavy rains. A very scenic lagoon can also be found in the western portion of the beach that makes it a versatile place to relax.

According to many beach critics and travel experts around the world, Oludeniz beach is Turkey’s best beach. The reason for this is that the tourist destination is very comparable with the seashores of Hawaii and Florida, in the USA, visitors can either surf or bath in the sun.

Despite the obvious beauty of the beach at Bamburgh , it is one of the few places where you will find yourself more inclined to look inland than out to sea because of Bamburgh Castle which overlooks the sea. Northumberland has numerous castles, but the view of the castle from the beach is unforgettable. The beach is and expanse of golden sand backed by sand dunes.
