Brandy in Kontrol Magazine

Brandy is the cover subject of this month’s Kontrol Magazine that is out on news stands right now. Inside, she discusses her relationship with her brother, Dancing with The Stars and what it is like to be held back by fear. Check the excerpts and photos from the spread below:

Brandy’s Advice to her brother
Where he is in life, I’ve been there and I don’t want him to go down some of the same roads I’ve traveled. It’s like, dude, I’ve traveled those roads for you. You don’t have to make the same mistakes. I want him to balance his career and his love life. I don’t want him to feel like he has to choose one over the other. He would rather find out on his own. He don’t want nobody telling him. I have to learn how to do it in a way where it’s not combative, so you see the struggle there with us.

On Dancing with the Stars
It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done physically and mentally. It required a lot of courage. It reawakened the competitive nature within myself. It was what I thought I lost, which was my confidence, courage, strength. I was afraid! Dancing has never been a comfortable art for me. You know dang on well, with these girls; Ciara, Beyonce and them, it’s a different type of thing when they are dancing in their videos. I’ve never been known for my dancing. Let’s just keep it one hundred!

On Being Held Back By Fear
You’re afraid of how great you could be, not if you’re not great. All fear does is keep you from the highest version of yourself. The truth is courage, but you need the fear to introduce you to the courage, just like you need the lie to recognize the truth. It’s all spiritual. It’s all about becoming the version of yourself that God created. I don’t mean to get Evangelistic, but it’s the truth.

You have to start listening to that intuition, that positive voice that’s within us all. It’s real! You don’t trust it because the other part sounds more believable. We’ve been taught that realistic is negative. It’s too good to be true. No; it’s too good not to be true! You change your thinking, you change your life. You got to prove to yourself that you are already are what you want to be.

Kerry Washington in Capitol File Magazine

Kerry Washington is this month’s cover subject on Capitol File Magazine. Inside the issue, she discusses her role in ‘For Colored Girls’, acting, her childhood and her views on society.

Check out a few excerpts from the interview below:

On her childhood:
“From a very young age, the subjects at the dining room table were affirmative action, sexuality education, low-income housing, education reform—the pros and the cons, the ideological histories, the sociopolitical contexts.”

On For Colored Girls:

“That play is such an important part of the American canon, but also of the canon for women of color. A lot of us have a For Colored Girls poem in our back pocket, the way you’d have a Shakespeare monologue in your back pocket.”

On being an actress:
“I don’t think of it in terms of being difficult. There are much more difficult jobs than mine, like running the State Department! My job does not compare to Hillary Clinton’s.”

On Society:
“It’s very easy to go along with the stereotypes we have in our minds of various political groups or people who identify with various groups,” She added “I think we tend to forget people’s humanity and make assumptions about who they are based on a political belief that they ascribe to.”

Toya Carter & Memphitz on the Cover of Sister 2 Sister Feb Issue

Rapper Lil Wayne’s ex-wife  and mother of his first born Toya Carter is making major moves.  She is currently featured on the February Cover of Sister 2 Sister Magazine with her new fiance’ Memphitz. in her interviewshe discusses her new book, along with her new fashion boutique and  her  BET Reality Show. Checkout some of the excerpts below:

Yes he’s like sexy chocolate (laughter) I’m kidding. He’s a family guy and that’s what I love. Like, he was raised by both parents until his father passed away. He’s very well-mannered. He’s not selfish. He’s 100 percent supportive. He’s a good friend…everything I ever wanted in a man. You can tell it’s a difference when a guy grows up with both of their parents. Like, everything was “yes ma’am, yes sir.” Respectful, like “Let me open the door for you.” These days, guys think that is lame when that’s really being a gentleman. He shows me and my daughter lots of respect. And you know, I love that about him. You don’t get that too much these days.

Toya On Her Friendship With Lil Wayne

Yeah, we’re really, really cool. Wayne actually did the foreword for my book. It’s like, him and MeMphHitz met and now everything is all good.

Toya On Her Upcoming Book

The name of the book is “Priceless Inspirations.” It’s about my life and growing pains and things I chose to share with younger girls. An example is teen pregnancy; domestic violence, drugs, the business-the list goes on. Relationships, boys-it’s all types of stuff, like heart break. Just everything that I have been through that has made me the woman that I am today. Like, sometimes people say you have to go through things to kind of get it. Like, nobody could tell me not to have my baby, even though everybody was against it and felt like I was a child having a child. I had to experience that. These little boys want one thing, but I still did what I wanted to do. It was just me being younger.

But sometimes stories can help you versus your parents or older people trying to tell you thing. Sometimes we feel like, “That happened to you but that don’t apply to us; that was back in the old days.” With my book I just wanted to do something inspirational. I named my book “Priceless Inspirations” because my name, Antonia, means “priceless” in Italian.

Toya On Her New Boutique

We opened October 21st and I had this big grand opening party. I mean, the business has been booming. God is good. I put a lot of love into the store because fashion has always been a passion of mine. It’s in a really nice neighborhood in New Orleans at 2108 Magazine Street.

Nicki Minaj in V Magazine

Queens Rapper Nicki Minaj is featured in the latest issue of V magazine,Nicki Minaj speaks on self-discovery and being in control of her brand.

I just always want to do ‘me,’ but ‘me’ changes every day. I would crumple up and die if I had to wake up and be the same person every day. I don’t silence those voice anymore. I just let them speak.

Everything I do has been approved by me personally. My team is mostly made up of guys, but none of them would ever think about telling me what to wear or what to do with my hair. They know that ultimately I am going to do what I’m gonna do.
