Fantasia is back on track and she’s got a new gig on Broadway.  Get the deets inside, plus sneak peeks at Idris Elba in the new Mandela bipic and Jamie Foxx as the villain in Amazing Spiderman 2

Fanny is spending her days in the gym, being a mom to two kiddies, and promoting her Side Effects Of You music.  And so far, it’s keeping her life drama free.  Now, she’s got a new gig as the first guest star in the Broadway production of After Midnight.

After working it out in The Color Purple on Broadway back in ’07, Fanny will be one of 25 singers and dancers to star in the jazzy musical production. Broadway.com describes it in full:

Conceived by Jack Viertel, After Midnight is an evocative new musical that tackles the sexy, smoky glamour of the Jazz Age, set in the heyday of Duke Ellington’s years at Harlem’s Cotton Club. The ever-changing list of stars is reflective of the Cotton Club’s weekly rotation of guests during its “Celebrity Nights,” which included the likes of Lena Horne, Judy Garland, George Gershwin, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.

Sounds right up her alley.  She will perform from the beginning of previews on October 18 through February 9, 2014, and will be the major headliner for the official opening on November 3.  Congrats Fanny!

As the world celebrates Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday today, a brand new teaser for the new film about Mandela’s life just hit the net. Check out the first peek at Idris Elba playing the iconic South African leader below:

TLC has been officially revived….by three of their biggest fans.  Check out the first promo pic with Drew Sidora, Lil Mama and KeKe Palmer as TLC for the upcoming biopic….

VH1 has released the first official promo pic for "Crazy Sexy Cool: The TLC Story".  And it made us do a double take.

Drew Sidora (as T-Boz), KeKe Palmer (as Chilli) and Lil Mama (as Left Eye) are going hard in transforming into the favorite girl group who sang, rapped and danced to the tune of bright colors, controversial safe sex messages and everything in between.

For the official promo shot, the three ladies re-enacted TLC’s 1992 album cover for Oooooh On The TLC Tip…. And we’re actually feelin’ it.

The TV movie was shot in just a few weeks in Atlanta recently, and will give the story of how TLC rose to fame, their trials and tribulations with money and managers, and what went on in their personal lives.

The "TLC Story" airs this November, and you can calm your nerves because the girls will be lip synching to TLC’s actual music.  T-Boz & Chilli, the two surviving members, served as consultants on the movie.

Will you be watching?

Jill Scott has landed a leading role on the upcoming CBS pilot "Second Sight."  Get deets on the show inside and find out who Evan Ross will play in the TLC biopic and see Tina Turner’s German VOGUE cover….

Fab chick Jill Scott continues to make major moves in Hollywood.  Having already landed leads roles in Steel Magnolias and The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, she’s now signed on to co-star with Jason Lee in "Second Sight."  The pilot, taped for CBS, is based on the British series, "Second Sight."  According to Deadline, it’s described as "a gothic psychological thriller about Tanner (Lee), the lead detective with the New Orleans Police Department who is hiding the fact that he has an ocular disorder that causes him to have horrifying hallucinations."

Jill will play Dr. Callier, the specialist who treats Jason’s ocular disease. Meanwhile, actor Derek Luke is also a part of the cast, playing Det. Paul Giroux, a new member of Jason’s team.

In the meantime, Jill also stars in Fox Searchlight’s Baggage Claim. But music fans shouldn’t fear that she’s turning her back on performing.  In fact, she just booked a gig headlining the Indiana Black Expo concert on July 20.

And in television movie news…

Evan Ross has joined the cast of the TLC biopic as producer Dallas Austin.  Dallas, who’s well-known for producing some of TLC’s biggest hit, is also the father of Chilli’s son Tron

Evan will join Keke Palmer as Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, Drew Sidora as Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lil’ Mama as the late Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Donny Boaz as TLC’s manager Bill Diggins.

It seems as though they’ve pretty much filled the major slots but were dying to know who’s going to play Pebbles, LA Reid and Babyface!

And on magazine racks……

She’s STILL got it.  Music icon Tina Turner lands on the April 2013 issue of German VOUGE. The cover photo, shot by Claudia Knoepfel and Stefan Indlekofer, shows the legendary entertainer wearing a midnight blue blouse by Giorgio Armani. Both the pants and the belt are vintage Giorgio Armani. And her makeup was done using Giorgio Armani Cosmetics.

It’s worth noting that this is Tina’s first VOGUE cover (ever) and at age 73, she’s the most "mature" (we wouldn’t dare say oldest) woman to command the coveted honor.

Fabulous!

CHANGE UP: Actor Jesse L. Martin REPLACES Lenny Kravitz In “Sexual Healing” Biopic

 photo JesseLMartinPunctureNewYorkPremieregF3mu3NQ17gl.jpg

Actor Jesse L. Martin is replacing Lenny Kravtiz in the lead role for the upcoming Marvin Gaye biopic "Sexual Healing."  Find out more inside….

Previously, we told you about the controversial Marvin Gaye biopic "Sexual Healing" and how Marvin’s son, Marvin Gaye III was a little upset that his childhood friend Lenny Kravitz had agreed to the role.  Mainly because the film focuses on the turbulent times of Marvin’s life and III wasn’t feeling it.  Now, Deadline.com is reporting that there’s been a shakeup in casting and now Marvin III will have to direct his frustration towards actor Jesse L. Martin.  If he still has any.

Jesse, who formerly starred on "Law & Order", will replace Lenny in the Julien Temple-directed flick which will start filming in later this month in Europe.

The film, produced by Vassal Benton and Fred Bestall, will focus on the music legend’s time in Europe in the 1980s when he attempted a drug-free comeback with the help of British music promoter Freddy Cousaert (played by Brendan Gleason).

Outside of the film, Jesse recently starred in the NBC pilot "The Secret Lives Of Husbands And Wives" (so far….the show hasn’t been picked up).

EXCLUSIVE: Keke Palmer Dishes On First Days Of Filming The “TLC Biopic”

Despite the backlash KeKe Palmer caught once she was announced to play Chilli in the upcoming TLC Bipopic, the actress/singer dished to us about what’s going down during the first weeks of shooting….

TheYBF.com’s caught up with the gorge 19-year-old KeKe Plamer on the red carpet of the recent Essence Black Women In Hollywood brunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel.  And she let us know how the filming will go for the much anticipated biopic about singing group, now officially named, “CRAZY, SEXY, COOL: THE TLC STORY.”

KeKe explained:

"I’m going to fly out tonight to Atlanta and going to meet the girl some time this week. The first few of weeks were going to be doing a lot of choreography. I’ve already talked to Drew [Sidora] and Lil Mama, and were just going to get in there and do it. All of us are fans, so that gives it something. We want to do great because we want to represent who we love. This is exciting for me, this is a really huge deal."

And it sounds like she’s learned how to handle the negativity by looking to the fab women ahead of her.  KeKe told us about being in awe of the women at the luncheon saying,

"You see these women who wrote the blueprint for themselves. They have pioneered their own careers and you can see that it’s possible. As long as you stay focused on what you’re trying to do, it’s coming from your heart."

The Charles Stone-directed movie will air on VH1.

We also caught up with Oprah on the red carpet who revealed why this brunch was such a full circle experience for her:

"It feels like a full circle moment. Essence was the first magazine to put me on the cover. It was back in 1996 before my international show. So it feels like I’m coming home."

And now…she’s taken over the globe.

Check out the full video above of our Essence Black Women In Hollywood red carpet interviews where we chop it up with Gabrielle Union, Mara Brock Akil and more.  Check out all the pics from the fab event HERE.

KeKe Palmer Joins The “TLC Biopic” As Chilli…Will Join Lil Mama As Left EYe

 photo clip_image002_zps2d4e0e2b.jpg

The "TLC Biopic" is about to start filming….and the cast has just been announced.  Check out who’s playing the roles of the girl group who brought us color, controversy and great music inside….

T-Boz, Chilli and Left Eye will be getting a VH1 movie made about their lives and group’s rise to fame.

It was reported recently that rapper Lil Mama will be taking on the role of Left Eye in the upcoming TLC Biopic that will air on VH1.  And that decision was met with controversy and petitions to stop the "Lipgloss" rapper from officially nabbing the role.  But oh wells, she’s in it.

 photo ScreenShot2013-02-17at32118PM_zps01d9f2f8.png

And today, it was just announced that KeKe Palmer, former Nickelodeon star in "True Jackson VP" and Lifetime’s "The Carlina White Story," will be joining the cast in the role of Chilli.

Apparently people are already complaining, saying she looks nothing like Chilli.  KeKe responded on her Twitter today saying:

People kill me, I don’t remember Angela Bassett looking ANYTHING like Tina Turner. And she RIPPED that role…People need to realize that movies aren’t casted by people looking like who they’re playing. They’re casted by who can do the role.

KeKe has also been working on her singing career lately, dropping a mixtape this past October, her debut studio back in 2007, and doing a few songs for the shows she’s appeared in.  And the 19-year-old says she’s been a fan of TLC since she was a little girl.  She said about growing up loving the group:

"I would sing No Scrubs over and over again to the point my parents would have to tell me to stop, but I never did, I had my little hairbrush as my mic and nobody could tell me I wasn’t the fourth member of TLC."

And she’s indeed aware that fans will drag this movie through the mud if it’s not made right.  The Akilah & The Bee actress said in her press release:

"I am a true fan. I love these ladies and I always want to be proud of my work in any role that I do".

The upcoming VH1 TLC biopic to be filmed in Atlanta, GA next month. And we hear that singer/"The Game" actress Drew Sidora has filled the role of T-Boz.

Are we feelin’ this?

NO LIKEY: Marvin Gaye’s Son Wants Lenny Kravitz To WALK AWAY From Biopic Role

Photobucket

Marvin Gaye III, the son of the late singer, wants Lenny Kravtiz to walk away from a planned biopic saying the producers and directors of the film are all wrong from the project. Get more info inside….

As with the Nina Simone biopic, the family of late singer Marvin Gaye is not on board with a planned biopic, but that hasn’t stopped producers from moving forward and hiring Lenny Kravtiz.  This would be a high profile acting role for Lenny, who attended an East Room reception at the White House before making an appearance at the Kennedy Center Honors last night.   But now, Marvin Gaye III is speaking out with hopes that his childhood friend & old schoolmate, Lenny, will honor the legacy of his father and withdraw from the flick. Marvin told TMZ,

"The producers and directors of this film are very wrong and shameful … [They're] trying to do a film about a low period in his life. They don’t even know the whole story."

Apparently, the movie will focus on the 80′s–a time of heavy drug use and right before Marvin shot and killed himself.

Marvin hopes to speak to Lenny because he doesn’t understand why he would do this movie–seeing that he and Marvin Jr. are still friends. "I would hope [Lenny] doesn’t have any idea that we are against this film being done."

We’ll let you know if Lenny changes his mind.  Highly doubtful….

Nina Simone’s DAUGHTER STILL Upset ABOUT Unauthorized BIOPIC And Zoe Saldana’s CASTING

Nina Simone’s daughter Simone has spoken out about the unauthorized biopic being made about her mother’s life, the casting of Zoe Saldana and how the director "backdoored" her way into the Nina Simone story. Get the story inside….

During a very interesting interview with EBONY, Simone, a Broadway actress and daughter of Nina Simone (shown above), gave her feelings about the casting of Zoe Saldana (shown at the top on the set as "Nina") and explained how someone could simply write a movie about her mom without her consent or involvement.  Here are the highlights:

Can you clarify your feelings about the casting of Zoe Saldana to play your mother?

Simone: I love Zoe Saldana’s work. I’ve seen some of her movies more than once and really enjoy what she brings to the screen. As an actress I respect her process, but I also know that there are many actresses out there, known or not, who would be great as my mother. The one actress that I’ve had in my heart for a very long time, whose work I’m familiar with already, is Kimberly Elise. Many people have spoken to me about Viola. I love her look. I love her energy. Both of the actresses that I’ve mentioned are women of color, are women with beautiful, luscious lips and wide noses, and who know their craft. I also have no problem introducing someone we’ve never heard of before who can play my mother.

This project that’s going forward, you’ve talked about having little to nothing to do with it. How does that happen?

S: I’ve been asking myself that question. How does that happen? As I said on my blog, when the announcement came out approximately six years ago that Mary J. Blige had been cast to play Nina Simone, I heard it along with everyone else and I was very concerned. How does someone just decide to do a story about someone and completely bypass family? Completely bypass her representatives? We offered to get involved with all the stuff that we have, from the music, to the pictures, to her writings, to connecting them with the stories of many people who were close to my mother, and we were ignored

So you’re not a gatekeeper. So you’re not someone who’s trying to whitewash your mother’s legacy is what you’re saying?

S: No, not at all. Her life is educational, inspirational, entertaining, and downright shocking at times. My mother was good at shocking people. She enjoyed it and she did it well. So why do we need to embellish, to build a tall tale? That is what Cynthia Mort has done. She has taken my mother’s name and then bought the life rights to her male nurse turned manager, Clifton Henderson’s life. In my opinion, she came in through the back door. I was saying, come in the front door, let’s have a cup of tea, let’s talk about it. Let’s work together.

I asked her ‘How did you get in contact with Clifton?’ She said she googled him. I asked her ‘If you googled him, I was starring on Broadway at the time. I’m her only child. I’m not hard to find. Why didn’t you contact me?’ It’s interesting because it took a little while, but the truth finally came out. She told me she was told not to contact me. My mother and I had our ups and downs, like any family, but we loved each other until the end, and I wouldn’t try to edit our troubles out of any project.

When Cynthia and I ended the call, we agreed to talk again the next day. I felt like we’d broken some really good ground that we’d created a place from which we could continue to communicate. But when I called into the conference call the next day, I was the only one on the line.

Standing her up on the phone was REALLY shady on part of the director.  Will you watch this?

In the wee hours of morning, the London Fire Brigade reports that Rihanna, along with 300 people, were evacuated from their hotel after an early-morning fire in an elevator shaft.  And as 10 firefighters fought the flames on the 7th floor of the luxury Corinthia Hotel. RiRi hopped herself in a cab and rode around the city tweeting “Roamin da streets since 6am! Fyah in da telly.”

Yesterday….

She was spotted signing autographs as she left her hotel.

She rocked one of her own Armani designs (for the second time).  And in case you missed it, one of Rihanna’s bodyguard punched a photographer who got too close to the singer on Sunday night.  A fire and a fight?  Londontown’s on fire for Rih.

Andre 3000 SPOTTED In Dublin FILMING Jimi Hendrix Biopic + Eve’s Full Reebok Classics Documentary

Rocking a serious afro, purple trousers and a funky shirt,  Andre 3000 was seen in Dublin on the set of the upcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic.  See pics of Andre channeling his rock idol and watch rapper Eve throw on her Reebok Classics for her inspiring documentary about her struggles and triumphs as an artist.

Andre 3000 was spotted outside The Stag’s Head pub in Dublin, Ireland, in character as Jimi Hendrix, for the upcoming biopic All Is By My Side yesterday.

The flick is being shot under tight security, with photographers being discouraged from taking pics.  But some photos of Andre with co-star Hayley Atwell did manage to trickle off the set.

The pair were later seen laughing after breaking from a scene.  Have a feeling Andre is going to indeed do this role justice.

In other movie news……
