Wiz Khalifa reportedly is denying that he stole the idea of his chart-topping hit ‘Black and Yellow’ from a Pennsylvania songwriter. The rapper was slapped with a copyright-infringement lawsuit by local artist named Maxmillion who alleges that Wizzy lifted the concept of ‘Black and Yellow’ from his song ‘Pink N Yellow.’
Maxmillion (real name is Max Gregory Warren) filed court documents on Dec. 30, 2011 claiming he copyrighted ‘Pink N Yellow’ in 2008 in efforts to sell the song. He contends that Wiz, along with producers Stargate and Rostrum Records, stole his idea and created ‘Black and Yellow,’ ‘Black and Purple’ and other remixed versions of the song. He accuses them of engaging in a “scheme to defraud plaintiff out of the fruits of his copyright of the Subject song.”
Wiz has told friends that he’s never heard of Maxmillion or his song and would never rob another artist’s creative ideas, reports TMZ. “It’s just a plot that happens all the the time to rappers to get money,” a source told the website. “This is just some no-name rapper who wants to get paid.”
TMZ was able to get in contact with Warren’s attorney and he states that Wiz knows exactly who his client is because they have discussed a possible settlement. Reps for Wiz say that no agreement ever took place.
Also named in the lawsuit is Wiz Khalifa’s publishing company PGH Sound, EMI Music Publishing, Warner Music Group and Atlantic Recording Corporation. Warren is seeking $ 2.3 million in punitive damages.
Attorneys for Wiz and Stargate had no comment on the matter.
