INTERVIEWS: Mara Brock Akil & Debra Lee PREVIEW “Being Mary Jane” In Washington, D.C.

 photo marab3_zps132acc04ll.jpg

This week, Debra Lee and Mara Brock Akil welcomed a selected group of media to a private screening of the BET-original movie Being Mary Jane starring Gabrielle Union.  And we were inside the room to get the dish about the new tv movie/series.  Find out why Mara handpicked Gabby for the lead role inside….

The fabulous Mara Brock Akil, the creator of the upcoming BET-original movie and series "Being Mary Jane", invited TheYBF.com for a special preview of the film (premiering Tuesday, July 2nd at 10:30P EST).

Though BET CEO Debra Lee kept the Q-n-A short, Mara did reveal why she handpicked Gabrielle Union for the series’ lead and she explained that Mary Jane is a woman in control of her sensuality.  Here are the highlights:

Q: What do you want people to take away from the movie?

A: That’s a good question and that’s hard to answer. I just want to have a conversation.

Q: What’s your favorite moment in the movie?
A: It’s the moment when she’s looking in the mirror and it was so honest.

Q: Was Gabby always your choice for the star role?
A: My husband Salim Akil met Gabby when he was casting for Jumping the Broom (I believed she tried out for a role) and he kept in contact with her. I had my small list of people but she delivered the role.

Q: In one scene, why did she masturbate before she went out for the night?
A: As females, we are sexual beings. Our sexuality ties into our emotions but it’s a little pit of PSA and a little bit of reality.

Q: A lot people will compare this to "Scandal", so how do you think Being Mary Jane is different?
A: It’s different because in "Scandal" you see a black woman living in a white world. You see a lot of shows with affair and murder plots, but I think it’s hard enough just getting through the day.

SPOTTED: Lil’ Kim and Tiffany Foxx GO DARK For D.C. PRIDE

 photo imageff.jpeg

Lil’ Kim and her rprotege Tiffany Foxx were spotted partying in Washington, D.C. over the weekend.  See them backstage at the club inside…

 photo imagekk.jpeg

Legendary rapstress Lil’ Kim was spotted partying backstage at Club Fur in Washington, DC this past Memorial Day weekend. The duo (both sporting jet black locks–a change up for the usually blonde Tiffany) were in town to celebrate Pride Weekend. Also, Tiffany promoted her newly released mixtape Goal Diggers.

 photo imagepoi.jpeg

And while the Queen Bee is reportedly back in the studio working on new music, her frenemy Nicki Minaj recently paid Kim a compliment on NYC’s Hot 97.  When asked about beef and her favorite rappers, she said

"I don’t have beef with anybody – let me just say that…My favorites are Foxy, Kim and then Remy – they were all from New York. It’s no disrespect to any other female rappers, but those are the ones I felt like, ‘Oh, OK – I could get into that’. They sounded like me when I spoke and I just thought they really made an impact."

Wow…that’s a big change from a few years ago.   She also shouted out folks like Missy. Maybe…just maybe…our darling Nicki has made a change for the (grown up) better…

FEELING IT: Kelly Rowland BARES HER SOUL During TEARFUL “Dirty Laundry” Performance In D.C.

 photo kellyrosjddd.jpg

Kelly Rowland hit the stage for an emotional performance of "Dirty Laundry" over the weekend.  What Ms. Rowland bare her soul inside…

Kelly Rowland kicked off her summer tour with The-Dream recently and during their stop through the Washington, DC area this weekend, fans watched her rip through a heart-wrenching performance of "Dirty Laundry".

Wrtten by The-Dream, the autobiographical track takes Kelly to a place we rarely see her as she admits to being abused, admits she was envious of Beyonce’s success in a bittersweet way and admits she was doubtful of herself.

As the audience sang along, Kelly rifted through her emotions before a tearful breakdown towards the end. Pick up a copy of Talk A Good Game when it hits stores on June 18th.  Gotta love her.

CELEBS GIVE BACK: FIRST LADY Michelle Obama & Kerry Washington “FREEZE-DANCE” And Brings The “Arts” To D.C. Kids

 photo sac4.jpg

First Lady Michelle Obama joined actress Kerry Washington to help inspire community children to change their lives through the arts recently.  Find out where they went and what they did inside…

 photo MichelleObamaVisitsLocalWashingtonDCs1RIgCGUappl.jpg

First lady Michelle Obama and actress Kerry Washington appeared at Savoy Elementary School in southeast Washington, D.C today as part of the Turnaround Arts initiative of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

The program gives grants to low-income schools, in an effort to improve students’ overall performance through arts education. Several celebrities have signed on for the program with  Kerry adopting Savoy Elementary and actor Forest Whitaker and actress Sarah Jessica Parker each adopting schools last month.

 photo MichelleObamaVisitsLocalWashingtonDC52MdDa_rjEfl.jpg

During her talk, which include a few dance moves, the FLOTUS touted Kerry for her committment to the program and enouraged the school kids to keep striving for success, even when faced with failure and rejection.

“Kerry got a lot of rejections She spent a lot of time developing her craft. She spent a lot of time practicing and working and trying out for things and having people tell her. ‘No,’ ‘No thank you,’ ‘You’re not good enough,’ ‘You’re not pretty enough.’ Could you imagine somebody telling Kerry that she wasn’t pretty enough, she wasn’t tall enough, she was too short? That’s all performing is, is rejection. … But when you work hard and you invest thousands of hours in anything, you get better. And that’s what you guys are learning here at Savoy.”

 photo sac1.jpg

 photo sac5.jpg

During her remarks, she also thanked Kerry for her level of involvement and called her a "friend".

"She’s not just a beautiful, fashionable, talented woman, but she’s real inside, and there is beauty deep inside. The fact that she is flying all over the country but she comes to spend time with you guys, and she does it for real; the fact that she’s taken time out of her schedule to come here today, it shows a level of respect for me, of course, and our friendship, but it shows more her love for all of you. So, Kerry, love you, girl. Keep it going. Very proud of you."

 photo sac3.jpg

And Kerry really threw her hat in the ring with the children…she kicked off her heels and joined the kids on stage for some and dance.

Later in the day, Kerry also read stories to one of the third grade classes.

Malia Obama — VIP At Rihanna’s D.C. Concert

 photo maliaoatrihannadcconcertybf_zps3d274482.jpg

And this is how the First Daughters ball out.  Malia Obama rolled to Rihanna‘s Diamonds World Tour when it stopped in Washington D.C. tonight (Monday).  Check out how she partied it up in VIP on a school night….

The 14-year-old daughter of President Obama–who turns 15 July 4th–lived out most teenaged girls’ dream Monday.  Malia took some time away from her private school studies and made her way to the Verizon Center to watch Rihanna "pour it up" on stage.

We’re told the eldest Obama girl spent the whole concert dancing and having the time of her life with her friends in their own little world above the concert goers.  Hey, we all have a lil ratchet in us.

The gorge teen, dressed in cutoff shorts, a white tee and a plaid button down, may have been singing and dancing along to every song, but don’t expect for her to copy Rih Rih’s serious tattoo behavior anytime soon.

Papa Obama said in a recent interview with NBC that he and First Lady Michelle have a plan to prevent their girls from getting inked:

“Michelle and I have used the strategy when it comes to things like tattoos – what we’ve said to the girls is, ‘If you guys ever decide you’re going to get a tattoo, then mommy and me will get the same exact tattoo in the same place. And we’ll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo.  And our thinking is that might dissuade them from thinking that somehow that’s a good way to rebel.”

Ha.  Gotta love it….

Free Hits The “Dead Man Down” Screening In D.C., Tweets About Losing Her Radio Gig At WPGC

 photo deadm4.jpg

Media personality Free hosted a screening of "Dead Man Down" yesterday, just one day after she revealed that she’s left her radio gig at WPGC-FM.  Find out what she said about her departure inside….

 photo deadm2.jpg

Yesterday, Free, looking cute in red, joined FilmDistrict athlete West End Cinema in Washington, DC to host a screening of the flick Dead Man Down starring Colin Farrell, Terrence Howard, Noomi Rapace and Dominic Cooper (opening March 8).

She spoke about the movie saying, "I am an action drama nut, so this movie definitely spoke to me. Colin Farrell gets finer by the day and all I could think about was Terrence Howard saying I have a car and a driver. Overall, it was a really good movie. There were some parts that was a little slow to watch, but I love when you can figure out who the bad person is."

 photo deadm5.jpg

But as Free smiled through the event, the big elephant in the room was that she’s no longer working at WPGC-FM.

 photo deadm3.jpg

We’re not sure if she was fired or if both parties mutally agreed to part ways but she did tweet, "Dear DMV: I have enjoyed our time on the radio. Today was my last day at @WPGC #staypositive #ontothenext yall know how this goes!"

See also said goodbye to her co-workers saying, "Dear: @DJHeatDC @thejuliewright @GuyLambertNews was my pleasure Thanks for all the lessons and laughs!"

From the tone of the tweets, it doesn’t seem like she knew she was on the way out the door.  But we’re sure she will land on her feet somewhere…

Rocsi Loves The Kids–Invades A D.C. School As ‘Celebrity Principal Of the Day’

 photo schooledrocsi2_zps6fcba7d8.jpg

Rocsi Diaz is all about keeping the kids in school.  So she recently visited students at Washington D.C.’s Browne Education Campus with the National Get Schooled Victory Tour…and put on a schoolwide assembly and served as “Celebrity Principal for the Day”.

Check out the fun times with Rocsi giving back inside….

 photo schooledrocsi1_zpsab98dba0.jpg

Wish we had celebrity principals back in the day in school.  Rocsi Diaz, former "106 & Park" host and current "Entertainment Tonight" correspondent, teamed up with D.C.’s WPGC and the Get Schooled Foundation to visit the middle school students of Browne Education Campus.  And it was all to celebrate their achievement of significantly raising their attendance rates as part of the Get Schooled National Attendance Challenge. Nice!

In addition to serving as the Celebrity Principal for the Day, Rocsi–rocking her R13 Denim Leather Chap Jeans–hit the classroom to co-teach a 7th Grade Science class and 8th Grade Language Arts class (we’re sure THAT was interesting) and was even interviewed by a student.

 photo schooledrosci3_zps35dbbb85.jpg photo schooledrosci4_zps4598c756.jpg photo schooledrosci5_zps0dac9d56.jpg

Rocsi told the students: “There is nothing more important than showing up to school every day, working hard, and staying focused on earning your high school degree. I am so proud of all the Brown Education Campus students who took the Get Schooled Attendance Challenge, worked together, and came out on top in raising their attendance rates.”

 photo schoolrosci10_zpsf4534139.jpg photo schoolrosci8_zps4c7bebb1.jpg

Rocsi’s visit to Browne Education Campus marks the kick-off of the nationwide Get Schooled Victory Tour that is aimed at informing students across the United States about the importance of school attendance, high school graduation and college readiness. The tour will bring other celebrities to five additional cities, including Baltimore, Los Angeles, and Providence and will run through the end of April.

Since an astounding 7.5 million students miss a month of school or more, putting too many students at risk for dropping out, this is def a fab cause Rocsi’s pushing.

COUPLEDOM: Halle & Olivier Are Shopping Lovers + Alonzo & Tracy Mourning Cozy Up In D.C.

 photo mournn2_zps9e6d7c32.jpg

Alonzo Mourning and his championship ring were hard to miss yesterday evening as he and his wife, Tracy, arrived into Washington D.C. ahead of the Inauguration festivities.

We’ve got their cute pics, plus Halle Berry looking totally smitten while out shopping with fiance Olivier, inside….

 photo mournn1_zps0344429d.jpg

How cute!  42-year-old NBA champ Alonzo Mourning cuddled up with his wife, Tracy, as they braved the arctic chill of D.C. last night.  The Miami couple bundled up outside the airport while waiting for their car.  And we’re sure they’re gearing up for the umpteen Presidential Inauguration festivities this weekend.

Meanwhile, over in L.A.:

 photo sweate2_zpsba4993bb.jpg

Halle Berry & Olivier Martinez are so in love and they love to show it.  Ms. Berry is starring in the upcoming flick Movie 43, and her Frenchman seems to never be able to keep his eyes off her.  Can we blame him?

The twosome were spotted arm-in-arm while shopping around their city yesterday:

BALL: T.I. & Tiny JET To D.C. For Homecoming At Howard U.

Everybody’s rolling into D.C. this weekend for Howard University’s Homecoming.  So T.I. & his ride-or-die wifey Tiny jetted into the nation’s capital  to party with the youngins.

Pics of the reality star couple making their "Ball"-erific arrival…

Carrying luggage that’s more expensive than a person’s wardrobe that’s in it, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle looked…dare we say it…kinda cute for her flight.  She rocked a mint green & pink skull embellished fleece off-the-shoulder sweatsuit by Vintage Havanna while her hubby kept it casual (with his sexy self) with his lime green studded MCM bag.

The twosome made their way into Washington DCA airport yesterday afternoon before hitting the party scene:

"Ball" rapper T.I. will be hosting a party at FUR nightclub tonight to close out the Homecoming festivities.

And he even performed in the pouring rain at YardFest yesterday once he hit the campus.
