 photo SolangeKnowles2013NorthsideFestivalDaym8fuIP-3QXQx_zps6ffed974.jpg

Concerts were everywhere this weekend from New York to Atlanta.   Check out Solange Knowles dropping it like it’s hot on stage at Brooklyn’s 2013 Northside Festival at McCarren Park and pics from day 3 of Bonnaroo in case you missed ‘em.  Plus, the celebs who turned out to hit the stage at Atlanta’s Birthday Bash 18…

After a whirlwind of performing in umpteen cities and countries this last week, Solange was back home in BK on Sunday performing at the Northside Festival.

Rocking a printed hat and a striped shirt and cutoffs with cut-out bandage style boots, Solo let loose with the mic during her performance:

After gettin’ low for the fans, she tweeted, "Northside! Brooklyn! New York! U beautiful people made me feel really good in side. I hope you enjoyed:( I’m happy I took those heels off."

Ha!  Peep video below:

By the way, also over the weekend Solo headed to Tennessee for Bonnaroo.  And rocking the cutest summer look and twists, she took over that stage too

Nas was also down south taking over the stage for the big festival:

And down in Atlanta, every rapper that usually jumps at the chance to perform on stage….did just that.  At 107.9′s Birthday Bash 18, your typical faves plus a few others came out to celebrate at Atlanta Philips Arena in front of a sold out crowd:

Since T.I. was on hand to take the stage with B.o.B., his fam–Zonnique and an OMG girl, Messiah and others were right backstage ready to support pops during Father’s Day weekend.

The "We Gettin’ It" collabo partners rocked out with some hits:

The "Love & Hip Hop ATL cast was there–at least in part.  Traci Steele, DJ Baby Drew (wonder if he ever found his $ 50K), Erica Dixon and her daughter (that she has with Scrappy) hit the stage looking cute.

And Trinidad James…it wouldn’t be an Atlanta show without him or his cane.  He hit the stage with Young Dro…this guy’s shenanigans….

Before he headed to Vegas yesterday, Drizzy was back home in Toronto waking up each morning in a new Bugatti….literally.  Pics of his new million dollar whip inside…

"Started From The Bottom" rapper Drake isn’t frontin’ in his songs when he raps about Bugatti and other million dollar ish.  At least not this time.  He just copped a brand new shiny black Bugatti Veyron.  And those whips go for a cool $ 2.5 mill.

He posted the above pic on Instagram saying, "It’s levels to thi…never mind. #SangNoir #ShouldHaveBeenASoccerPlayer #EuroLifestyle #CreamsicleGuts"

And he took his new toy out for a spin in Toronto this week:

Must be nice though…

BACK IN THE STUDIO: Jay-Z Taps Drake For Possible Upcoming Album + Janet Jackson Dishes On New Project & Love For Kendrick Lamar

 photo screen-shot-2013-05-18-at-9-08-59-pm_zpsf8b65bcb.png

Looks like both Jay-Z and Janet Jackson are returning to the studio to create brand new projects.  Check out how Ms. Jackson says she’s celebrating 20 years after the janet album, and who Jay’s cooking up music with in the lab…

Hip Hop Producer Lenny S (Kodak Lens) spilled the tea on some new music comign out the Roc Nation camp.  And it looks like it’s all for a new upcoming album from Mr. Carter.

Lenny posted a pic of Jay, rocking a Soulland brand "BOURGEOISIE" shirt, in the studio with Drake today working on some new music.  He said, "Warning: Please be very afraid of the music we’re working on. OVO x ROCNATION."

The two also collabo’d on "Light Up" on Drake’s Thank Me Later album.  We’ll see how this new collabo sounds…

 photo jay-z-raekwon_zpsd4cdb366.png

And last week, Lenny also posted a pic of Jay working with rapper Raekwon.  Looks like some classic ish is on the way…

And in other comeback news, Janet Jackson is working on a new project.  Woot!  Nope, she didn’t let her brand new (secret) marriage and recent muslim conversion halt her music career.

She told Billboard on the anniversary of her janet album yesterday about her new project, the artists she’s feeling, and how she feels about being two decades in with one of the most iconic albums (7x platinum) of all time.

May 18 marks the 20th anniversary of "janet." How would you describe what that album captures about your life at that time?
I can’t believe it is already 20 years! I always write my music based on what is going on in my life at the time. I wanted to allow people in… I want my fans to really know me. The ‘janet’ album was sexual and I was beginning to really discover that side of me.

There are musical references and direct samples of janet. songs all over the place now, most notably on Kendrick Lamar’s "Poetic Justice." Have you heard most of these re-interpretations (Moon Boots’ "Sugar," which samples "If," How To Dress Well’s cover of "Again," MNEK’s "That’s The Way Love Goes" etc?) And how does it feel to see your work have such impact on new artists?
I have listened to the music that is out there and I love Kendrick’s "Poetic Justice." There are artists, true performers that have come before me who have been a big inspiration to me. I hope I do the same for others.

Several of the songs on janet. and their accompanying videos were groundbreaking at the time for their overt sexuality. Why was it so important for you to express that part of yourself in your work, and how did you convince others around you at the time to let you take those risks?
Like I said before, I write about my experiences or things that touch me deeply. I was really beginning to get in tune with my sexual self. This is what I wanted to express so I did. The decision to move forward in an artistic way is mine. I didn’t need to convince anyone.

The videos and tour for "janet." featured some iconic choreography from Tina Landon, most notably on ‘If.’ Do you have a favorite dance or video from that period?
Tina Landon and Omar Lopez choreographed "If". I love "That’s The Way Love Goes," "You Want This" and especially "If." I don’t think people really realize what we were showing in that video that wasn’t available with technology then. The video featured futuristic technology, specifically high definition touch screens. I wanted the actors in the video to use these screens to communicate, and relate with each other in the clubs. Similar to what we all do with our smart phones and tablets today. As I look at our lives now, it seems that life is imitating art. I have seen different elements from all of these videos in lots of artists work and it’s a great feeling to know that you have inspired them in such a way.

Many artists cite you as a role model and a huge influence on their career and image. Which artists today do you admire?
I’m flattered that other artists consider me a role model. I’m really enjoying what Bruno Mars and Adele are doing, a lot of artistry there.

And she says about releasing her first project since 2008′s Discipline:

“I am working on a new project now. We are creating the concept and initial thoughts on the music.  I am excited about the direction we are taking. I don’t want to rush it… I don’t want to put a time constraint on the creative process.”

We’ll be (impatiently) waiting….

Lauryn Hill Pens Another “OPEN LETTER” About Record Deal & Tax Woes, Drake Makes SURPRISE Appearance On “American Idol” + Snoop Lion & Cori B. PERFORM “No Guns”

 photo LaurynHillTaxSentencingYLSeJDBHH2Xl-1.jpg

Lauryn Hill has offered up an "open letter" to explain why she didn’t pay her taxes and reveal her plans for new musiuc.  Read the letter inside and see Drake on "American Idol" and Snoop Lion on "The Late Show".

We told you previously that Lauryn Hill has been given some extra time to pay off her massive tax bill and that she’ll be releasing new music.  Now, Lauryn has taken to her Tumblr page to bring fans up to speed on why she hasn’t paid off her taxes and why you shouldn’t believe that her new record deal was worth a reported $ 1 million.

During her verbose rant, she lays out a politically astute explanation about not making music (the conflict between art & commerce) and for not paying her taxes (the record company made the bulk of the money and left her in financial need).  This chick has more excuses than a lil bit.

One thing’s for sure, her letter shows she still has what it takes to pack a punch with her words.  We just hope the new music and her singing voice as still up to par.

Here’s the letter:

It has been reported that I signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes. Yes, I have recently entered into an agreement with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, to launch a new label, on which my new music will be released. And yes, I am working on new music.

I’ve remained silent, after an extensive healing process. This has been a 10+ year battle, for a long time played out behind closed doors, but now in front of the public eye. This is an old conflict between art and commerce… free minds, and minds that are perhaps overly tethered to structure. This is about inequity, and the resulting disenfranchisement caused by it. I’ve been fighting for existential and economic freedom, which means the freedom to create and live without someone threatening, controlling, and/or manipulating the art and the artist, by tying the purse strings.

It took years for me to get out of the ‘parasitic’ dynamic of my youth, and into a deal that better reflects my true contribution as an artist, and (purportedly) gives me the control necessary to create a paradigm suitable for my needs. I have been working towards this for a long time, not just because of my current legal situation, but because I am an artist, I love to create, and I need the proper platform to do so.

The nature of my new business venture, as well as the dollar amount reported, was inaccurate, only a portion of the overall deal. Keep in mind, my past recordings have sold over 50,000,000 units worldwide, earning the label a tremendous amount of money (a fraction of which actually came to me).

Only a completely complicated set of traps, manipulations, and inequitable business arrangements could put someone who has accomplished the things that I have, financially in need of anything. I am one artist who finds value in openly discussing the dynamics within this industry that force artists to compromise or distort themselves and what they do, rather than allowing them to make the music that people need. There are volumes that could (and will) be said.

MLH

Girl…pay those taxes…

And on "American Idol":

Drake made a surprise appearance on "American Idol" last night to offer some words of encouragement to one of his biggest fans, finalist Candace Glover.  In response to Candance’s performance of his "Find Your Love" song, he told her, "You have an angelic voice. I almost wish you were there in the studio creating it with me. I feel like we could have brought it to life together."

The appearance was hooked up by Drake’s labelmate, "Idol" judge Nicki Minaj.  Drizzy later tweeted, @NICKIMINAJ is an incredible person for setting that up. Love you always. Thank you!”

And on "The Late Show":

Snoop Lion hit the stage with his daughter Cori B. to perform their anti-gun violence track "No Guns Allowed" on "The Late Show with David Letterman." The song appears on Snoop’s Reincarnated disc.  How cute is this father-daughter duo?!

MUSIC: Azealia Banks’ “Yung Rapunxel” Video + “No New Friends” Ft. Weezy, Drake & Rick Ross + Jason Derulo’s “The Other Side”

 photo ScreenShot2013-04-16at123016PM_zps27fb8c3f.png

Azealia Banks just dropped her brand new video for "Yung Rupunxel".   We’ve got the Harlem chick’s first video off her upcoming studio album inside, plus music from DJ Khaled and his homies Rozay, Weezy & Drizzy, plus Jason Derulo returns to the scene…

Yung Rapunxel is here.  Azealia Banks took time away from her many Twitter Beefs to actually drop a hot video for her lead single "Yung Rapunxel."  The breathy and dance tempo track gets laced with her usual hard core flow we love.  And the video is giving us a Crystal Waters 90′s vibe.  Check it out above.

Jason Derulo is back on the scene and just released a teaser for his brand new single "The Other Side."  Check out the lyric video above.

And finally, Drake, Weezy and Rick Ross aren’t feling having any new friends.  They’re on top of the game, and they’re only dealing witht he folks who rode with them to get there.  Check out their new track, pushed out by DJ Khaled, below:

SHOTS FIRED: Drake Says Chris Brown Is “Insecure”…And He Respected Rihanna When She LANDED IN HIS LAP

 photo Drake-Chris-Brown-620-x-4001_0_zpsef7254ae.jpeg

During Chris Brown‘s recent publicity tour for his upcoming album X, he’s addressed the Drake beef a few times.  But now, it’s Drake’s turn.  And dude is coming out the gate swinging…in his usual passive aggressive way….

A few years ago while Chris & Rihanna were broken up after their "incident", Rih was rumored to be getting it in with Drake.  The rapper appeared on her "What’s My Name" song and in the video, and the two never denied the rumors.

Since Drake & Chris WERE homies, awkwardness set in. Which brings us to the still prevalent beef over Rihanna.

The "Started From the Bottom" rapper hit up Elliot Wilson’s EVR radio show Friday evening and told folks media needs to "stop asking him sh*t about that man."  Drake called him insecure since his music is better than Chris’ and  because Rihanna fell into his lap.  Sigh.

The passive aggressive shots continued when Drake was asked if he thinks it’s the media who’s stirring up the drama:

"For any media out there, don’t ask me sh*t about that man when I come up there.  And leave that man alone.  Stop preying on his insecurities.  His insecurities are the reason I make better music than him…I’m more popping than him…At one point in life the woman he loves fell into my lap and I did what a real nigga would do and treated her with respect."

Oh?

Drizzy continued:

“She’s not up there talking down on me.  All those things combined creates an individual that comes up to your radio station and do dumb sh*t.  It shouldn’t be about tearing that man down.  We have an issue.  And it’s either going to drag out or maybe in 10 years we’ll laugh about it over drinks.  Just leave that sh*t alone.”

He said nobody wants to hear him attack Chris in a rap, and nobody wants to hear Chris rap, so you’re not going to get anything out of it.  Essentially he’s saying Chris is not the usual rapper he’s beefed with in the past like Common or Jay-Z.  So…leave it alone.  Because "he’s good".

Chris’ response? An "LOL" on Twitter.

Hit up that 2:50 mark to hear everything Drake had to say:

Keshia Knight Pulliam Claps Back At Critics About Her “Splash” Body + Tatyana Ali DISHES On HOOKING UP With Drake And Her 1-Night Stand

 photo keshco.jpg

"Splash" star Keshia Knight Pulliam has snapped back at folks commenting on her swimsuit body.  See what she said inside and watch Tatyana Ali dish on popping bottles with Drake and defend her one-night stand comment.

Keshia Knight Pulliam stopped by VH1′s "Big Morning Buzz" to promote tonight’s debut episode of the ABC diving competition series "Splash." During the chat, she joked that, "There’s no other sport where your goal is to land on your head."

And while talking about all the bumps and bruises she endured while filming the show, Keshia also addressed the criticism she’s received about her body once pics from the set leaked.

"As a woman, I don’t care how confident you are, you have those moments.  And I know a lot of people who said ‘Why did you do it?" Well, I have a non-profit called Kamp Kizzy and it’s all about empowerment and self-esteem.  And I was like, I tell my girls this all the time, so I have to live it.  I have to be that example.  You have those moments….but I am who I am and I have to love and embrace myself."

Fans of the former Cosby kid and "House of Payne" star can catch Keshia tonight on the premiere of ABC’s "Splash", at 7/8pm CT.

Get More: Big Morning Buzz Live With Carrie Keagan

Also on tv talk shows…..

"Second Generation Wayans" star Tatyana Ali stopped by "The Wendy Williams Show" today where the host got the actress to open up about her life as a child star.  And Tatyana also cleared up a few controversial comments she made about one-night stands.

But before they could get to her thoughts on hooking up, Wendy blindsided Tatyana with a pic of her boo’d up with rapper Drake.  When Wendy asked if they had hooked up, Tatyana began blushing wildly and refused to confirm "yes or no."  But while smiling and laughing like a school girl, she told a story about him buying her a bottle of champagne at the Supper Club in LA for her birthday, and ended by saying, "I think he’s amazing…I think he’s awesome."

We’re sure.

The subject of "hooking up" with Drake led to a discussion of one-night stands. In a recent "Q-n-A" with The HuffPost, Tatyana gave one very shocking answer that she had to clear up on "Wendy."  In the article, it read

Q. What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
A. Bread pudding with chocolate! And one-night stands.

The little tidbit set off a wave of nasty and judgmental comments.  Tatyana said the comment was tongue-in-cheek but she was surprised by the backlash she received with this being 2013!  She went on to say that "if" the comment were true….she’s a grown woman! Wendy chimed in and said women have the right to live their lives and make choices…as long as they are being responsible.

The BET star also revealed that she was very close to her first tv mom, Janet Hubert (the first Aunt Viv) and her tumultuous departure was like a divorce.  She said Janet taught her how to ride horses amongst other things.  She also commented that tension ran high on the set, but Will Smith NEVER made the cast choose between him or Janet.

VISITING HOURS: Drake Visits Lil Wayne At The Hospital, Ron “Slim” Williams Talks Wayne’s Hospital Release

 photo drakeway_zps95faad93.jpg

The YMCMB fam is flocking to Cedars-Sinai Hospital to visit their head honcho Lil Wayne.  A somber Drizzy inside….

After reports hit the net last night that Wayne was in critical condition in the ICU after suffering more seizures, rapper Drake was seen leaving Cedars-Sinai Hospital around 8:50pm PT Friday night after visiting his good friend.

As previously reported, the 30-year-old rapper was admitted to the hospital Friday afternoon after one of his bodyguards found him in his room, on the floor and unconscious.

While Wayne’s publicist confirmed another seizure occurred Friday, after he was just released on Wednesday for the same issue, TMZ reported further info that Wayne’s prognosis was uncertain, that he’s in an induced coma, and people were coming to say their goodbyes.

Wayne’s friends and family (and a tweet from Wayne’s account) deny those stories and maintain he is recovering.  Ronald “Slim” Williams, co-founder of Cash Money records, called in to Seattle’s Eric Powers & Karen Wild radio show yesterday to Wayne is fine and may be released the next day (Saturday).  He was at Lil Wayne’s side in the hospital:

Interestingly, Lil Wayne’s album I Am Not A Human Being 2 drops March 26th.

Chris Brown Goes On Club Rant Saying “F*ck Drake”, Address Valet Drama In Cali & More

 photo ScreenShot2013-03-07at54607PM.png

Chris Brown is not having a good week in the PR department as he’s allegedly fought with his bodyguard, cursed out a valet parking attendant and hopped on stage to deliver an anti-Drake rant.  Get the deets inside…

Chris Brown just can’t seem to catch a break.  To see just how nuts Chris’ week has been, let’s trace back his steps.  Last night, Chris hopped on stage at Emerson Theatre in Hollywood.  E! Online reports when the DJ started spinning Drake’s song, "Started from the Bottom," Chris hopped on the mic and immediately told the DJ to stop playing the music. He told the crowd, "The DJ can play this s–t, but I want you all to know, F–k Drake!" and gave everyone the middle finger.  The rant "naturally" lead into a impromptu performance of "As You Were," "Turn Up the Music" and "Beautiful People."

The DJ from that night tweeted this:

 photo ScreenShot2013-03-07at70703PM_zpsecc215cd.png

But before the anti-Drake rant, TMZ reports Chris went to a charity event at PINZ bowling alley in Studio City, CA. After the event ended, Chris attempted to get his car keys from the valet but was told he needed to pay $ 10. Sounds reasonable right? But once Chris found out that everyone else only paid $ 5–according to someone in his crew– he felt like he was taken advantage of.  So this may explain why he cursed out the valet saying,  "Gimme my f*cking keys … f*ck ten dollars. Gimme my keys … we gonna turn this whole spot up … I promise you."  After the threat to "turn the spot up," someone from Chris’ entourage paid the ten bucks.

And before the valet incident, there was a plane trip from Bermuda! Sources at E! say Chris had a fight with his bodyguard Big Pat on a prvate plane during a stoppver on the island for fuel.  The "fight" was so problematic that Pat reportedly flew home by himself…on JetBlue.

It sounds like Chris needs a vacation from the spotlight.  Do we feel like CERTAIN media is targeting Chris for some foolish things?  Yes.  Should he go out of his way to not give them any reason to?  Probably.
