Keke Palmer can school adults on a few things and she’s not even old enough to drink yet. The Crazy.Sexy.Cool actress, who stars as Chilli in the new TLC biopic set to premiere on VH1 this Monday, has had an almost smooth transition in her acting career as a child star turned adult actress. Although she admits that people still view her as her adolescent character “Akeelah” from “Akeelah and the Bee,” she admits that’s not such a bad thing and that she understands the time it will take for people to shed their youthful perception of her.
When people think of me initially, they remember me as ‘Akeelah’… Sometimes it can be frustrating to be remembered at an age that you’ve outgrown. But at the same time, it’s never frustrated me to the point where I wanted to lash out. I just take it one step at a time. I’ve been patient in letting other people adapt to me and my growth.”
The actress, who is also transitioning into becoming a triple threat (adding singing and dancing to her resume), also goes on to say that she feels less is more when proving one’s adulthood. For example, Palmer has had a live-in boyfriend for the past two years, yet refuses to go around reminding fans that because of this, she is “grown.” Instead, she feels one’s maturity speaks for itself. Unlike Miley Cyrus’ very public x-rated proclamations to prove she’s an adult, Keke steers clear of such transitional cliches and would rather just let people get “it” through her everyday actions.
“If anything, [doing the most] makes you look even more like a kid… As an adult, you don’t have to go around saying ‘Hey, I’m an adult!’ That would be like me saying ‘Guess what — I’m black!’ You know it already.”
We couldn’t agree more. Be sure to catch her on VH1 for the Monday Premiere of Crazy.Sexy.Cool!
